Atlantic City Revenues Down by almost 13% in September 2013
The cacophony that met the news that Atlantic City will soon house the servers that will fire up the state’s online gambling business, has been somewhat muted with the news that the brick and mortar casino revenue for the city declined by 13% in September.
The online gambling business is expected to bring in over a billion dollars in the first year, and it couldn’t come sooner, with the casino giants struggling to retain their profitability amongst hard times for casino companies in Atlantic City, with interest in tables games, slots and bingo ailing badly, despite the rise of online versions of gaming favourites like free online bingo.
The figures were even more dour when you factor in that gambling hot spot was the home to the Miss American contest in Sep, an opportune moment to attract more recreational players through the city’s 12 casino doors.
Those 12 casinos earned £62.9m in revenue, down 19% from a year ago, and slots revenue alone was down $177.3m, down 10.6% from a year ago, prompting fears about the future of these types of games in brick and mortar casinos.
20,593 people attended the Miss America contest, that spanned four-days, but during that time only the Atlantic Club Casino showed a profit (up 4% to $12.3m for the month).
Bally's Atlantic City was down 18.1% to just over $20m, the Showboat Casino Hotel was down 16.8% to $16.1m; and Revel Casino Hotel was down 11.9% to $14.8m. Harrah’s Resort Atlantic City was down 9.8% to $29.5m, the Golden Nugget Atlantic City was down 6.8% to $10.7m; and the Borgata Hotel Casino and Spa was down 6.5% to $51.7m.
Finally, the Tropicana Casino and Resort was down 6.1% to $20.2m and Resorts Casino Hotel was down 2.7% to $11.5m.
Atlantic City used to be the jewel in the American gambling crown, pulling in almost $5.2bn in revenue in 2006, before competition grew in neighbouring states.
