The air was thick with
frenetic excitement as people gathered from
all across the world for the highly
anticipated 9th All Africa Poker Tournament,
which was hosted at Piggs Peak Hotel &
Casino in Swaziland this weekend.
With a breathtaking prize pool of Three and
a Half million Rand, it is no secret why
this tournament has been dubbed “the richest
poker tournament in Africa!”
With such high stakes, it comes as no
surprise that the interest and participation
in the All Africa Poker Tournaments,
continue to grow exponentially.
This time around, the tournament sported a field of 120 players, 30 more
than the previous tournament held in
February 2007.
After a gruelling 30 hours at the poker
table, 26 year old Claude Sacks claimed his
title as All Africa Poker Champion
winning the much desired One Million Rand first prize as well as an all
inclusive package to enter the World Series
of Poker US$10,000 Main Event.
The heads up battle with former All Africa
Poker finalist, Neville Eber, was filled
with electrifying tension as Sacks’ proved
his poker skill in an intense struggle,
which most players would have given up on.
The fighting spirit of a true poker player
helped Sacks to grind his way back after
losing the majority of his stack, to finally
win the tournament.
Once again the element of skill was affirmed in this game that is not
recommended for the faint hearted!
It also became clear that poker is no longer
the territory of men only, since eight
ladies enrolled for the competition,
with the highest finisher, Karin Hasseriis,
ending in an excellent 14th place.
To satisfy the curiosity of more than three
million viewers and poker fans, the
television crew took their positions to film
this exciting event,
which will be screened on the All Africa Poker Channel, DSTV 121
throughout the year.
And cameras flashed as celebrities such as
famous singer Danny K (finished 47th)
and Super Sport presenter Neil Andrews
(finished 75th) competed against many of the
poker legends of Africa, including Peter
Vermaas, Ryan Brauer and Christopher Convery.
Team All Africa Poker, comprising Claude
Sacks, Neville Eber, Darryn van Heerden, Ray
Rahme and Ryan Brauer,
will be heading for Las Vegas to enter the
WSOP Main Event in early July 2007.
The team is sponsored by Piggs Peak Casino. Super Saturday’s Neil Andrews
will be following all their action and
antics in a video diary, which is being
filmed for All Africa Poker Channel as well.
All Africa Poker Tournament Director Sandy
Koor, advised that the next tournament date
will be released shortly,
and all poker enthusiasts should keep a
close watch on

details.
